Radar Gun vs. TrackMan: What’s the Difference in Baseball Tracking Technology?

If you’ve ever watched a baseball game, you’ve seen them: a coach behind home plate pointing a small device at the pitcher, or a tablet screen lighting up with colorful trajectory charts. One is the classic radar gun. The other is TrackMan.

Both measure pitch speed. Both are used by scouts, coaches, and players. But they are fundamentally different tools—built for different jobs, with different levels of data, accuracy, and cost.

So which one do you actually need?

If you’re a coach running a high school program, a parent training a young pitcher, or a developer building a sports tech product, this guide breaks down the real differences between radar guns and TrackMan—and helps you decide what fits your situation.


The Short Answer: Different Tools for Different Jobs

A radar gun does one thing well: it measures speed. Point, shoot, get a number. Simple, portable, affordable.

TrackMan does many things well: it measures speed, spin rate, launch angle, trajectory, break, extension, and more. It’s a complete tracking system—powerful, data-rich, and expensive.

Think of it this way:

  • Radar gun = a speedometer

  • TrackMan = a flight recorder with GPS, accelerometers, and video

One tells you how fast. The other tells you why.


What Is a Radar Gun? (And How Does It Work?)

A radar gun is essentially a specialized radar sensor that uses the Doppler Effect to measure the speed of a moving object. It sends out a radio wave, catches the reflection, and calculates how much the wave’s frequency changed. Bigger change = faster speed.

Most modern radar guns are actually millimeter wave radar devices, operating in the 24GHz or higher frequency bands. Millimeter wave radar offers better accuracy and smaller antenna size compared to older radar technologies, which is why today’s handheld radar guns can be so compact.

What it measures:

  • Pitch speed (typically peak or release velocity)

What it doesn’t measure:

  • Spin rate

  • Break or movement

  • Release point or extension

  • Trajectory

Radar guns are simple, portable, and relatively cheap. You can buy a decent Stalker or Pocket Radar for a few hundred dollars. That’s why they’re still everywhere—from little league tryouts to college bullpens.

The catch: Radar gun readings can vary depending on where along the flight path the measurement is taken. A pitch loses about 10 mph from release to the plate due to drag. Some guns measure closer to release (higher numbers), some closer to the plate (lower numbers). That’s why you’ll sometimes see a 2–4 mph difference between a stadium gun and a scout’s gun.


What Is TrackMan?

TrackMan is a dual-radar + optical tracking system originally developed for golf, then adapted for baseball. It uses what the company calls “Optically Enhanced Radar Tracking” (OERT)—two radar systems synchronized with high-speed cameras. Unlike a simple radar sensor that only measures speed, TrackMan combines radar and optical data for a complete picture.

TrackMan doesn’t just give you a number. It gives you the full physics of the pitch or hit—where it started, how it moved, where it ended up, and why.

The trade-off: TrackMan is expensive. The portable B1 unit costs thousands of dollars, and the stadium-grade systems are even more. It’s also more complex to set up and requires clear sightlines and proper lighting for accurate tracking.

The Accuracy Question: Which One Is “Right”?

This is where things get interesting.

Neither is wrong. They just measure differently.

TrackMan measures release velocity—the speed of the ball the moment it leaves the pitcher’s hand. That’s the true “raw” speed.

Most handheld radar guns (which use mmWave radar technology) measure somewhere between release and the plate. Depending on where the gun “locks on,” the reading could be 1–3 mph lower than TrackMan.

Here’s what experienced evaluators have observed:

“TrackMan velocities were within one MPH of the Stalker on most every pitch. Often TrackMan would read something like 91.5, our gun would read 92.”

“I’ve seen a pitch register at 90 on TV, 92 on the stadium gun, and 95 on TrackMan.”

So who’s right? Both are correct for their measurement point. TrackMan is measuring at the hand. The stadium gun is measuring somewhere further down the line.

Bottom line: If you’re comparing velocities across different sources, be aware of the 1–3 mph “TrackMan bump.” It doesn’t mean TrackMan is inaccurate—it means it measures earlier in the flight.

It’s also worth noting that not all radar sensor-based devices are created equal. A high-quality millimeter wave radar sensor can provide more consistent readings than older, lower-frequency radar guns, especially in challenging conditions like rain or high humidity.


Which One Should You Use?

Choose a Radar Gun If:

  • You’re a high school or college coach running tryouts and need quick velocity checks.

  • You’re a parent training a young pitcher and want to track progress over time.

  • You need portability and simplicity—pull it out of your bag and start measuring in seconds.

  • Your budget is under $1,000.

  • You only care about speed, not spin or movement.

Radar guns are also great for training intensity monitoring—for example, making sure a pitcher recovering from surgery isn’t throwing too hard too soon.

Choose TrackMan If:

  • You’re a college or professional program serious about player development.

  • You need spin rate, break, release extension, and trajectory data to design pitches or fix mechanics.

  • You’re a scout or recruiter who needs reliable, comparable data across hundreds of players.

  • You have the budget and staff to learn and use the system properly.

What About Developers and DIY Projects?

Here’s where this gets relevant for you.

If you’re building a smart training device, an automated strike zone, or a portable pitch tracker, you have options:

  • Build with a mmWave radar module (like a 24GHz Doppler radar sensor)—you get speed data, moderate accuracy, low cost, and full control over the form factor. Millimeter wave radar technology is particularly well-suited for sports applications because it’s immune to lighting conditions and can measure through protective netting.

  • Integrate with TrackMan data—you get everything, but you’re locked into their ecosystem and price point.

  • Use a camera-based system—requires heavy processing and good lighting, but can track trajectory and position.

For most sports tech developers, starting with a radar sensor based on mmWave radar technology makes sense. You can build a custom solution that does 80% of what TrackMan does for 10% of the cost—and sell it or integrate it into your own platform.


The Bottom Line

Radar guns aren’t dead. TrackMan isn’t overkill.

  • Radar guns (powered by mmWave radar technology) are fast, cheap, and good enough for velocity tracking in most amateur and developmental settings.

  • TrackMan is deep, powerful, and expensive—built for professionals who need to know not just how fast, but why and how.

If you just want to know if your kid gained 2 mph on his fastball over the summer: buy a radar gun.

If you want to redesign a pitcher’s slider by analyzing spin axis and break profile: get TrackMan.
