From Storm Tracking to Precision Speed: How mmWave Radar Reshapes Our World

Table of Contents

In early July 2026, an S-band fully polarized active phased-array weather radar model “WDSPT0152” was officially unveiled in Zhuhai, Guangdong. It can complete full-domain 3D scanning within 60 seconds and monitor mesoscale and small-scale severe convective weather systems in real time over a range exceeding 460 kilometers—meaning that for the first time, humanity has minute-level precision analysis capabilities in the face of extreme weather events such as heavy rain, hail, and tornadoes.

Hailed by multiple media outlets as “one of the world’s most advanced weather radars,” this product represents a major breakthrough in civilian radar applications. But it is only one facet of radar technology. Beyond the grand narrative of meteorological monitoring, another type of radar technology—millimeter-wave radar—is reshaping our mobility, industry, and daily lives in a far more “down-to-earth” manner.

I. Millimeter-Wave Radar: The “Precision Ruler” of Electromagnetic Waves

Millimeter-wave radar typically operates in the frequency band between 30GHz and 300GHz. Taking the commonly used 76-81GHz band as an example, its wavelength is only about 4 millimeters. It is precisely this extremely short wavelength that endows it with unique “perception capabilities.”

Unlike the active phased-array architecture used in the WDSPT0152 weather radar, the most mainstream approach for distance and speed measurement in millimeter-wave radar is Frequency-Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) technology. In simple terms, the radar transmits a continuous electromagnetic wave whose frequency increases linearly over time (known as a “chirp” signal), and then receives the echo reflected back from the target. A frequency difference is formed between the transmitted signal and the echo, and this difference is directly proportional to the target’s distance—this is the fundamental principle behind ranging.

In terms of speed measurement, Doppler radar sensor technology truly excels. By transmitting multiple equally spaced chirp signals and analyzing the extremely subtle phase variations between them, it can accurately calculate the target’s velocity. This characteristic makes it exceptionally effective at tracking moving targets.

It is precisely this dual capability of “measuring distance with one hand and speed with the other” that has made millimeter-wave radar an irreplaceable perception core across multiple domains.

II. Speed and Distance Measurement: The Two “Ace Cards” of Millimeter-Wave Radar

1. The All-Weather Sentinel of Autonomous Driving

In the field of intelligent driving, mmWave radar sensor is the undisputed cornerstone of perception. Its core advantage lies in all-weather operational capability. When camera visibility degrades by 50% in rain, fog, or snow, and lidar detection range shortens by 30%, mmWave radar sensor maintains over 90% of its penetration capability.

Furthermore, its speed measurement accuracy can reach <0.5km/h, perfectly supporting ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control) in its high-precision tracking of preceding vehicle speeds. At 100km/h, mmWave radar sensor can detect stationary vehicles up to 150 meters ahead, providing the AEB (Automatic Emergency Braking) system with a critical 1.5 seconds of reaction time.

Additionally, the per-unit cost of 77GHz millimeter-wave radar is significantly lower than that of lidar, making it the most pragmatic choice for mass-produced vehicles.

2. The All-Round Perceiver of Smart Transportation

On urban roads and highways, mmWave radar sensor also plays a pivotal role. 4D imaging millimeter-wave radar operating in the 76-81GHz band can accurately detect vehicle targets over a range of 5 to 600 meters, acquiring speed, distance, angle, and azimuth information, while providing preliminary imaging of the environment and obstacles within 120 meters.

After processing, this data can detect traffic anomalies in real time, including stopped vehicle events, wrong-way driving, pedestrian events, and congestion. In this role, it functions like a tireless traffic officer, safeguarding road safety around the clock.

3. Mid-Range Radar for Diverse Applications

Beyond long-range detection, mid range radar solutions have emerged as a versatile category for medium-distance perception needs. These mmWave radar sensor module solutions typically cover ranges from 0.25 to 120 meters, making them ideal for blind spot detection, lane change assist, and rear cross-traffic alert in automotive applications. As a compact mmWave radar sensor module, they offer the perfect balance between detection range and system integration, enabling cost-effective deployment across a wide spectrum of use cases from industrial automation to smart infrastructure.

4. The High-Resolution Eye of Meteorological Detection

Returning to the meteorological domain mentioned at the beginning, millimeter-wave radar also demonstrates its prowess. For instance, the UAV-borne millimeter-wave cloud radar independently developed by the Radar Research Institute of Aviation Industry Corporation of China utilizes a phased-array architecture to perform “CT-style” 3D scanning of cloud layers, capturing fine structural characteristics and vertical distribution information, and outputting key data such as reflectivity factor, velocity, and spectral width in real time.

Moreover, the millimeter-wave cloud radar deployed by the Jiangxi Provincial Meteorological Bureau can observe from near ground level up to nearly 20 kilometers in altitude, vividly capturing cloud system variations with altitude, effectively filling the gap left by traditional radars that can only view partial cloud systems through cross-sectional slices.

III. Weather Radar and Millimeter-Wave Radar: Two Ends of a “Perception Network”

From the WDSPT0152 weather radar to automotive millimeter-wave radar and cloud radar, together they form a three-dimensional perception network spanning from macro to micro, from space to ground.

Comparison Dimension S-Band Phased-Array Weather Radar Millimeter-Wave Radar (Speed/Ranging)
Typical Frequency Band 2-4 GHz (S-band) 24GHz, 76-81GHz
Core Application Large-scale weather monitoring, disaster warning Speed measurement, distance detection, target recognition
Detection Targets Cloud clusters, heavy rain, cyclones (kilometer scale) Vehicles, pedestrians, cloud particles (meter to centimeter scale)
Core Advantages Ultra-long range, wide coverage High precision, high resolution, all-weather capability
Key Technologies Full polarization, active phased-array, digital beamforming FMCW, MIMO, 4D imaging

The WDSPT0152 weather radar represents “breadth” and “strategic early warning”—it needs to “see far and see wide,” providing minute-level macro analysis for disaster prevention and mitigation. Millimeter-wave radar, on the other hand, represents “precision” and “real-time perception”—it needs to “measure accurately and measure quickly,” providing the most fundamental dynamic data for autonomous vehicles, traffic management systems, and even meteorological research.

The two are not substitutes but complementary partners: weather radar tells us “where heavy rain is about to hit,” while mmWave radar sensor tells us “exactly how far this vehicle is from the one ahead and at what speed.”

IV. Future Outlook: The Evolutionary Path of Millimeter-Wave Radar

Millimeter-wave radar technology is continuously evolving along the axes of higher integration, lower cost, and higher performance. From traditional 2D radar to 4D imaging radar, point cloud density has increased from 10 points/m² to 100 points/m², approaching the level of lidar. This means that mmWave radar sensor is not only capable of “perception” but is gradually achieving “imaging,” providing support for more complex scene understanding.

Whether it is the fully polarized phased-array weather radar unveiled in Zhuhai or the millimeter-wave radar currently transforming the automotive and transportation industries, they all point in the same direction: using more precise electromagnetic wave perception to make humanity’s understanding of the environment clearer, timelier, and more reliable.
